First Day of Internet Class

This is the outline for the first day of computer class.
So you want to learn how to use the internet. Or you want to teach someone how to use the internet.

What is Internet?

The internet is made of multiple connections and servers to the outside tech world.  The internet was created around 1969, the military department ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network). created the internet in the late 1960.

What is a website’s syntax (how is it written)?

It normally starts with
msn.com or www.msn.com or http://www.msn.com or https://www.msn.com
hotmail.com or www.hotmail.com or http://www.hotmail.com or https://hotmail.com
google.com or www.google.com or http://www.google.com or http://www.google.com
homedepot.com or www.homedepot.com or http://homedepot.com or https://www.google.com
amazon.com or www.amazon.com or http://www.amazon.com or https://www.amazon.com

You don’t have to add the http:// or the https://
It will automatically added in there for you.

What is a secure website?

But it could also start off with http or https
Hypertext Transport Protocol or
Hypertext Transport Protocol with Security
www.google.com will go to https://www.google.com
www.chase.com will go to https://www.chase.com

What are website extensions?

Some of the more popular example are

.com
.net
.org
.edu
.gov

But there are more than 882 extensions as of 2017 that started around around 1985

What is a domain?

A domain is a name of a company plus the extension.

What is a browser?

A browser is a viewer that lets you see the internet.  All the browser are free to install and use.
And they come in different languages.  So you can choose your favorite browser.
The five most popular browsers are

  1. Microsoft Internet Explorer
  2. Microsoft Edge (This is only available on Windows 10)
  3. Mozilla FireFox
  4. Google Chrome (Most Popular on Windows and Apple Products)
  5. Apple Safari (Most Popular on Apple Product)

The Five Steps to Go Online

(Some steps may vary on desktops or tablets)
How to go online with

  1. Open up the Browser
  2. Click on the address in the address bar
  3. On the keyboard, press on the “BackSpace”
  4. Type the address you want to visit – www.cnn.com
  5. On the keyboard, press on the “Enter”

How to Scroll Up and Down

  1. Vertical Bar on the right side
  2. The arrow on the keyboard
  3. The Page Up and Down on the keyboard
  4. The Scroll Wheel on the mouse.
  5. The touchpad on the laptops – you can use two finger on the touchpad to scroll up and down.  Not all laptops have this options.
  6. If you have a touch screen, then you can use your fingers

What is a website link?

A link is an active connection to another website or another part of the same website.
This is a active link to **Amazon** home page and this is not an active link to Amazon.
A link turns the cursor from an arrow to a hand.

This is my homework for my students

First bit of the homework
Go home and look for and bring me back 15 websites address from your surroundings.
Look at in your mailbox or in your food pantry food labels or magazines.

Second part of the homework
Go to those websites (You don’t have to stay on the website too long, but I do want you to scroll up and down the web site and scan the wording and images)
